7 Florida deaths blamed on Debby

LIVE OAK, Fla. -

Florida officials said Thursday that Tropical Storm Debby was responsible for seven deaths in the state.

State emergency operations spokeswoman Jessica Sims said that two people died in Pinellas County, including a 41-year-old woman caught in a riptide Wednesday at St. Pete Beach.

Storm-related deaths were also reported in Highlands -- where a woman was killed by a tornado on Sunday while clutching her baby girl, who survived -- as well as in Pasco, Polk, Lake and Madison counties. Last weekend, a South Carolina man also disappeared in the rough surf off the Gulf coast of Alabama.

Debby hovered in the Gulf of Mexico for days before slowly blowing across northern Florida this week and dumping more than two feet of water in some parts.

On Thursday, Gov. Rick Scott traveled to some of the hardest-hit areas in Florida to survey flood damages along with disaster chief Bryan Koon and Florida National Guard Adjutant General Emmett Titshaw.

Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron remembered well the last time he saw so much flooding in Live Oak and surrounding areas. He was an 11-year-old boy in Live Oak when Hurricane Dora flooded the small, north-central Florida county seat in 1964. He helped his grandfather then; this time, he doubled up as the county's emergency operations chief.

"The problem we have right now is sink holes, that's our number one problem at this time," Cameron said Thursday afternoon as he waited for a visit from Scott. "We've got a lot of roads that are still under water. There are probably 300 cars scattered around the county sitting under water."

Cameron's deputies and emergency workers had help from members of the Florida National Guard. He said about 85 people were still in shelters Thursday at the Suwannee County Agriculture Coliseum.

"My grandfather and I pumped water out of the city of Live Oak for six weeks," Cameron recalled. "We had brought all of our irrigation motors from our farm and pumped water."

Scott, whose scheduled arrival in Live Oak was delayed by a couple of hours by a lengthy Clemency Board meeting at the Capitol, told officials and some victims that he empathized with them.

"I grew up in the Midwest and the Missouri River used to flood," said Scott, who was raised in Kansas City. "You think about it as you go down and see the families who are devastated when their houses are under water. "

Scott noted that the Suwannee River has yet to crest.

"There's more to come," he said.

Scott and Koon spent more than an hour at the county's emergency operations center getting briefed on Live Oak's worst flooding since Dora before heading south to survey storm damage in Pasco County, just north of Tampa.

About 1,000 people In Pasco County remained without power Thursday. Seventy-three people and 15 pets were housed in two shelters in that county. One mobile home park that houses retirees in New Port Richey is still inundated with water; most year-round residents have evacuated.

In Hernando County, Fla., which received more than 15 inches of record-setting rain, dozens of sinkholes have opened up because of the enormous amount of water seeping into the ground.

Thursday morning, lifeguards on Clearwater Beach helped three people from the water who got caught in a rip current. On Wednesday, eight people were pulled from rip currents on St. Pete Beach, including the woman who died.

Authorities on Wednesday confirmed that a 71-year-old man was found dead in flood waters outside of his Indian Rocks Beach home after suffering a heart attack.

Federal Register | Applications, Reports, and Other Records for the ...

The Secretary announces deadline dates for the receipt of documents and other information from institutions and applicants for the Federal student aid programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, for the 2011-2012 award year. The Federal student aid programs include the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Work-Study (FWS), Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Pell Grant, William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan), Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant programs.

These programs, administered by the U.S. Department of Education (Department), provide financial assistance to students attending eligible postsecondary educational institutions to help them pay their educational costs.

Deadline and Submission Dates: See Tables A, B, and C at the end of this notice.

Table A?Deadline Dates for Application Processing and Receipt of Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) or Student Aid Reports (SARs) by Institutions for the 2011-2012 Award Year Back to Top

Table A provides information and deadline dates for application processing, including receipt of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and corrections to and signatures for the FAFSA, receipt of ISIRs and SARs, and receipt of verification documents.

The deadline date for the receipt of a FAFSA by the Department's Central Processing System is June 30, 2012, regardless of the method that the applicant uses to submit the FAFSA. The deadline date for the receipt of a signature page for the FAFSA (if required), corrections, changes of addresses or schools, or requests for a duplicate SAR is September 21, 2012. Verification documents must be received by the institution no later than the earlier of 120 days after the student's last date of enrollment or September 28, 2012. As a reminder, verification is not required for unsubsidized Direct Stafford Loans and PLUS Loans, TEACH Grants, and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants.

For all Federal student aid programs except Direct PLUS Loans made to parent borrowers, an ISIR or SAR with an official expected family contribution must be received by the institution no later than the earlier of the student's last date of enrollment for the 2011-2012 award year or September 28, 2012. For Direct PLUS Loans made to parent borrowers, FAFSA information processed by the Secretary must be received by the institution no later than the earlier of the student's last date of enrollment for the 2011-2012 award year or September 28, 2012. For purposes of only the Federal Pell Grant Program, a valid ISIR or a valid SAR for a student not meeting the conditions for a late disbursement must be received no later than the earlier of the student's last date of enrollment or September 28, 2012. A valid ISIR or valid SAR for a student meeting the conditions for a late disbursement under the Federal Pell Grant, FSEOG, FWS, Federal Perkins Loan or Direct Subsidized Loan programs must be received according to the deadline dates provided in Table A.

In accordance with the regulations in 34 CFR 668.164(g)(4)(i), an institution may not make a late disbursement later than 180 days after the date of the institution's determination that the student withdrew, as provided in 34 CFR 668.22, or for a student who did not withdraw, 180 days after the date the student otherwise became ineligible. Table A provides that an institution must receive a valid ISIR or valid SAR no later than 180 days after its determination of a student's withdrawal or, for a student who did not withdraw, 180 days after the date the student otherwise became ineligible, but not later than September 28, 2012.

Table B?Federal Pell Grant Program and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant Program Submission Dates for Disbursement Information by Institutions for the 2011-2012 Award Year Back to Top

Table B provides the earliest submission and deadline dates for institutions to submit Federal Pell Grant and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant disbursement records to the Department's Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) System and deadline dates for requests for administrative relief if the institution cannot meet the established deadline for specified reasons.

In general, an institution must submit Federal Pell Grant or Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant disbursement records no later than 30 days after making a Federal Pell Grant or Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant disbursement or becoming aware of the need to adjust a student's previously reported Federal Pell Grant or Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant disbursement. In accordance with the regulations in 34 CFR 668.164, we consider that Federal Pell Grant and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant funds are disbursed on the date that the institution: (a) Credits those funds to a student's account at the institution or (b) pays those funds to a student directly. We consider that Federal Pell Grant and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant funds are disbursed even if an institution uses its own funds in advance of receiving program funds from the Department. An institution's failure to submit disbursement records within the required 30-day timeframe may result in an audit or program review finding. In addition, the Secretary may initiate an adverse action, such as a fine or other penalty for such failure, in accordance with subpart G of part 668.

Table C?William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program and Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program Submission Dates for Disbursement Information by Institutions for the 2011-2012 COD Processing Year Back to Top

Romney attacks 'Obamacare' ahead of SCOTUS ruling

(AP) ? With an eye on the Supreme Court ruling this week, Mitt Romney on Tuesday said President Barack Obama's time in office would have been wasted if the high court strikes down the president's signature health care overhaul.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee previewed his health care strategy while speaking to supporters outside a Virginia machine manufacturer just two days before the Supreme Court was expected to rule on the constitutionality of Obama's signature domestic achievement.

"If Obamacare is not deemed constitutional, then the first three-and-a-half years of this president's term will have been wasted on something that has not helped the American people," Romney told more than 1,000 supporters gathered outside Carter Machinery in southwest Virginia. "If it is deemed to stand, then I'll tell you one thing, we're going to have to have a president ? and I'm that one ? that's going to get rid of Obamacare. We're going to stop it on day one."

At a fundraiser in Atlanta Tuesday, Obama countered that his health care law was critical to expanding health care coverage for millions of Americans and preventing companies from discriminating against people who are sick.

"We don't need to refight this battle over health care. It's the right thing to do," Obama said.

Romney's plan would not prevent health care companies from denying coverage to new customers with medical conditions. Nor would he force them to cover young adults on their parents' plans through age 26.

Though the economy remains the No. 1 worry for voters, the health care ruling could have the biggest near-term political impact. If the Supreme Court upholds the law, it would mean validation for the president and the Democrats in Congress responsible for its passage in 2010. But the overhaul mobilized small-government advocates and was a big force behind the GOP takeover of the House that year. So if the law is upheld, Republicans have a clear case to make for strengthening their numbers and their power to overturn all or parts of it.

Romney has public events scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday in Virginia, a state that has been an aggressive opponent to the health care law under Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. The former Massachusetts governor is expected to deliver public remarks in Washington following the Supreme Court ruling Thursday.

Romney's promise to repeal the health care law has become a pillar in an agenda that so far offers voters few other specifics. He released a new television ad campaign late last week stressing that the elimination of the health care law will be the top priority in his administration's first 100 days.

Should the court strike down the law, however, attention would turn quickly to what he would do to help 50 million uninsured people get coverage and bring down the nation's spiraling health care costs.

Only about one-third of Americans support the law, according to a recent AP-GfK poll, but 77 percent want the president and Congress to start working on a new health care bill if the Supreme Court rules the 2010 overhaul unconstitutional.

Romney has promised to replace the measure with a handful of "common-sense" reforms, but has spent little time so far crafting a comprehensive plan. He did not address any plans to replace the law Tuesday.

Obama was set to appear Tuesday at two fundraisers in Atlanta, followed by two events in Florida.

Total of 79 Potentially New Shark Species Found

News | Evolution

A genetic analysis suggests more overlooked species than scientists anticipated, raising concerns that populations of new species are quite small and endangered

From Nature magazine

A genetic study of thousands of specimens of sharks and rays has uncovered scores of potential new species and is fuelling biologists? debates over the organisation of the family tree of these animals. The work also raises the possibility that some species are even more endangered than previously thought.

Sharks and rays are key predators in marine ecosystems, but the life cycles and population numbers of many species remain poorly understood. The family tree of these animals ? which are part of the elasmobranch subclass ? has proved similarly opaque, with little agreement among researchers over their evolutionary relationships.

Gavin Naylor, a biologist at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and his colleagues sequenced samples from 4,283 specimens of sharks and rays as part of a major effort to fill the gaps. The team found 574 species, of which 79 are potentially new, they report in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History.

Naylor says that he was ?flabbergasted? by the result, especially because the sequencing covered only around half of the roughly 1,200 species thought to exist worldwide.

The huge number of new species found raises immediate conservation concerns ? the reason that some of these purported new species have gone undetected is probably their close resemblance to already-identified species. The populations of such species may, therefore, be even smaller than estimated, as what was thought to be one population may instead be several smaller populations of separate species.

For example, Naylor?s work suggests that the endangered scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) is actually two separate species. ?Scalloped hammerheads in general have taken a huge hit, so it may be even worse than has been documented if there?s more than one species out there,? he says.

Naylor is now working on a project with the US National Science Foundation to catalogue the diversity of sharks and rays and is working to assist the International Union for Conservation of Nature to map which species are where in the world.

?This will have an impact on what is considered endangered and the fragility of different organisms,? he says. ?These are sentinel species of all sorts of other organisms in the sea which are probably undergoing similar or worse kinds of impacts.?

Circling the answer
One of Naylor?s collaborators, William White, an ichthyologist at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Hobart, says that their work also highlights some of the problems with the use of genetic information in zoology.

The increasing use of molecular techniques provides a new means to scrutinize the relationship between sharks and rays, he says. But it also shows that some of the existing ideas about their relationships are problematic. ?Part of the problem is some researchers mining data blindly without a good understanding of where that data has come from in the first place and presuming the names are correct which in many cases they are not.?

White and Naylor stress that molecular techniques are only of one many available tools and should be combined with conventional taxonomic work.

Ximena V?lez-Zuazo is a biologist at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan and the lead author of a 2011 paper2 that Naylor says suffers from some of the flaws that stem from relying solely on molecular information. Though she strongly defends her group's work, she agrees that shark phylogeny is still a work in progress.

GE to supply 9E gas turbine system to JFE Steel in Japan

CTBR Staff Writer Published 19 June 2012

GE has agreed to supply JFE Steel with a heavy duty Frame 9E gas turbine system that will help the Japanese steel producer in its gas-to-energy recovery project at the East Japan Iron Works in Chiba City, Japan

To be installed by engineering, procurement and construction contractor Toshiba Plant Systems and Services, the 9E gas turbine will power the 150MW combined -cycle power project. In addition to the 9E gas turbine, Toshiba will also install GE-designed 9A5 generator at the same facility.

JFE steel has a stringent resource and energy conservation program that it implements at the East Japan Iron Works facility and the new combine-cycle will look to further the same.

Using the steel-mill's own blast furnace and coke oven gases to generate on-site power, the combined-cycle plant will help reduce the facility's annual CO2 emissions.

"As one of the world's leading supplier of gas turbines, we are excited to demonstrate how our heavy duty turbines have the operational flexibility to help JFE and other steel producers effectively deal with their gases that have fluctuating thermal qualities," said GE Energy president and CEO of Thermal Products Paul Browning

As part of the comprehensive 15-year parts supply and repair service agreement GE in addition to supply of the components will also service them.

Obscure physics words get sign language equivalents

Studying physics is tough as it is, but if you're deaf it can seem even harder as many of the terms don't have sign language equivalents. Now the esoteric language of physics has been translated into British Sign Language (BSL), and made available online.

The glossary of 119 physics words includes Milky Way, ampere, wavelength, vacuum and weightless. It should remove one of the barriers to deaf people taking part in science.

"Because physics is a cognitively demanding subject, and the BSL terminology did not exist, this placed a heavy demand on teachers of deaf children and communication support workers," says Rachel O'Neill, a lecturer in deaf education at the Scottish Sensory Centre (SSC) at the University of Edinburgh, where the system was developed.

Teaching a class of 13-year-olds the difference between mass and weight is tricky at the best of times as the terms are often used interchangeably in everyday English. If there is a deaf child in the class, it is especially hard because there is no established British Sign Language sign for "mass", and the sign for "weight" does not convey its scientific meaning.

Metaphorical basis

Finger-spelling, meanwhile, is too time-consuming and not every deaf person can lip read. Even if they can, the mouth patterns of certain words, such as "endothermic" or "exothermic", can be hard to distinguish.

Enter the new glossary, which is made up of 119 physics and engineering terms developed in British Sign Language (BSL) by a group of deaf scientists. The glossary builds on existing signs used by the deaf community and on "the visual or metaphorical relationship to what the things are like in real life", explains O'Neill.

The signs also build on one another to help convey the scientific relationships between the terms. The sign for mass, for example, is a fist which is then used as a basis for the sign for density (a hand around the fist) and weight (the hand and fist moving downwards).

The glossary, which consists of videos of people signing each term, is the first to include a signed definition of each term as well as the sign for the word, which should allow students and teachers to use it like a dictionary.

Visualising science

O'Neill estimates that "only a handful" of deaf students who fully rely on sign language are studying physics to an advanced level in the UK.

"I have heard of schools who refused to support a pupil who wanted to do physics because they said they could not provide a support worker with the right level of subject knowledge, and the lack of signs meant it was an almost impossible task," says O'Neill.

Had such a glossary been available when she was at school, Audrey Cameron, a deaf chemistry teacher who was involved in compiling the glossary, says she would have "benefitted hugely" because the new signs "help to visualise the scientific concepts".

The challenge now is to make sure the new terminology is picked up by teachers, support workers and students. O'Neill is optimistic but warns: "We don't know if the deaf community will take these signs on. Some may never take off."

America's avatars

The physics glossary adds to the biology, maths and chemistry glossaries that have already been devised by the SSC.

In the US, there is an equivalent website called Signing Math & Science, which uses avatars to demonstrate the signs. Because American Sign Language (ASL) uses different handshakes to BSL and tends to rely on more finger-spelling, the SSC had to develop their own terminology rather than borrowing from the American system. O'Neill says that the sign language used in Australia, New Zealand and India is more similar to that used in the UK so they could, in theory, use the SSC glossary.

Anyone searching for the sign language for the terms "quantum" or "uncertainty principle", however, will be disappointed as the new glossary is designed for deaf students aged 16 and under, who in the UK won't have met those concepts yet.

Translating scientific terms into sign language isn't just a challenge for schools, though. At the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, interpreters translate talks into sign language. They study papers ahead of time so they can come up with ways to sign them and have to decide whether to finger-spell or make up new terms.

Pets and More Pets ? Looking After Horse Teeth As Well As Equine ...

Equine supplements can do wonders for the horse. It could make him strong and good. Aside from this, you furthermore need to look after your horse?s teeth to ensure its health. Incisors begin to erupt within a couple of days of birth. Dental procedures have been performed on horses for more than 100 years. Veterinarians, horse owners, blacksmiths, farriers as well as lay people all have given dental solutions to the horse over the years. In recent years, a debate has developed in the horse community as to who should provide oral care to the horse. Present common standards of equine dental care range from having the blacksmith or farrier use an old hoof rasp to ?float? the pearly whites to an equine veterinarian offering a comprehensive dental examination, developing and applying an on-going treatment plan for your own horse. A lot of horse owners provide dental treatments for their own horses.

Dental cysts within the nasal passage can lessen air flow as much as 60 percent, producing heat and trauma. Pressure from growing permanent teeth on the nerves of the infraorbital foramen could affect meridians in the scapula (shoulder blade) as well as the anterior portion of the front lower limbs of the animal. Dental cysts of the mandible affect the meridians of the TMJ, traveling to the point of the shoulder and along the under side of the horse to the stifle, then on the anterior portion of the hind leg over the hoof.

Table angles of both molars as well as incisors are imperative to good equine dental care. The molars of the horse must be remedied before incisor correction could take place. If the mandible is restricted and can only move half as far as normal the teeth will wear out two times as fast. A lot of the malocclusions that aren?t tackled in the floating of points are: waves, sheared tables, slipped molars, hooks, ramps, as well as highlighted transverse ridges, to name a few. Sooner or later the mount cannot take the extreme pain any longer and will respond.

The deciduous (baby or milk teeth) incisors are whiter and broader as compared to their long-lasting replacements. These types of teeth are mainly used for gathering food and self care. There will be typically 12 deciduous incisors in the teen horse and twelve incisors in the older horse. Both the deciduous and permanent incisors are often used to ?age? the animal. The eruption of these kinds of teeth takes place at predictable time frames for the age of the mount and therefore, ageing the horse with the aid of these teeth within the first 5 years of age is pretty accurate.

Equine Supplements plus the proper dental care will help your horse. Other ?wear? related attributes of the incisors (infundibular cup?s, Galvayne?s groove, incisor hook) tend to be less reliable in determining the actual age of a mature horse. Personal and breed differences, differences in diet, stereotypical actions (windsucking, cribbing, fencing rubbing), environmental situations and many additional factors all play a role in how the horse?s teeth may wear. Determining the estimated age of a horse older than 5 years old is at best a professional estimate.

Horse experts have different advice and expert thoughts about how you take excellent care of your favorite equines using the best Joint Supplements in their day-to-day diet regime.

No verdict in first day of Sandusky deliberations

The jurors in the sexual abuse trial began their deliberations Thursday after hearing vastly different portrayals of the former Penn State assistant football coach. Jerry Sandusky's attorney told jurors there was "not one piece of physical evidence," while prosecutors asked that Sandusky receive "the justice he really deserves." NBC News' Michael Isikoff reports from Bellefonte, Pa.

Updated at 9:24 p.m. ET: Jurors in the child sexual abuse trial of former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky deliberated for more than seven hours Thursday without reaching a verdict.

Kimberly Kaplan of NBC News reported from Bellefonte, Pa. M. Alex Johnson is a reporter for msnbc.com. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

Deliberations were scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. ET Friday in Centre County Court in Bellefonte, Pa., where Sandusky is charged with 48 counts alleging that he abused 10 boys over 15 years. Three other counts were dropped early Thursday.

Judge John Cleland said the jurors had asked to rehear the testimony of two key prosecution witnesses: former Penn State assistant coach Michael McQueary, who testified that he overheard Sandusky having sex with a young boy in a football locker room shower, and Jonathan Dranov, a family friend who testified that McQueary told him about incident. Those arrangements were to be worked out Friday morning.

The jury began its deliberations about 1:30 p.m. ET and worked straight through the afternoon and early evening, for nearly 7? hours, following closing arguments in which they heard two starkly different descriptions of the case against Sandusky.

The prosecution and the defense clashed over defense attorney Joseph Amendola's suggestion that the entire case was a conspiracy among police, prosecutors and the alleged victims and their lawyers, in hopes of a big payday in future civil trials.

"The system" prejudged Sandusky and "set out to convict him" even though the case against him makes no sense, Amendola said.

But Deputy Pennsylvania Attorney General Joseph McGettigan, the lead prosecutor, argued that it defied common sense to believe the police and court systems would have conspired to bring down a figure as beloved in the community as Sandusky, the former longtime defensive coordinator for Penn State's nationally famous football team and founder of the Second Mile charity for troubled children.

"What would we gain?" he asked.

Sandusky, 68, was charged in two grand jury indictments that accused him of having used his connection to one of the nation's premier college football programs to "groom" the 10 boys for sexual relationships.

Eight of the 10 alleged victims testified during the trial. Another whom the jury never heard from was Sandusky's adopted son Matt, whose lawyers said Thursday afternoon ? after deliberations had begun ? that he, too, had been abused by Sandusky.

Sources told NBC News that Matt Sandusky's potential rebuttal testimony was why Sandusky chose not to testify in his own defense.?(NBC News and msnbc.com generally do not identify victims of sexual assaults, but Sandusky chose to identify himself in a public statement released through his attorneys.)

Sources: Adopted son as possible witness helped keep Sandusky silent

Legal analysis: Sandusky's attorney hits home run in closing argument

"No one wins in this case. This is awful no matter what happens," Amendola said during the closing defense argument. "If Jerry Sandusky did this ? if he did this ? he should rot in jail. Bless his heart, that's my feeling.

"But what if he didn't do this? His life is destroyed."

Amendola repeated the phrases "it doesn't make sense" and "does that make sense?" like mantras throughout his 75-minute closing statement, highlighting what he said were inconsistencies and logical impossibilities in the evidence against Sandusky.

"All these alleged charges only go back to the mid-'90s, so out of the blue, after all these years, when Mr. Sandusky is in his mid-50s, Mr. Sandusky decides to become a pedophile? Does that make sense to anybody? Does that make sense?"

Amendola accused the eight men who testified that Sandusky had abused them as children of seeking to cash in on eventual civil trials against his client.

"We can understand these kids now want to be compensated ? the lawyers want to make all these dollars ? but it still doesn't mean Mr. Sandusky did this," he said.

Amendola also accused investigators of having coached the alleged victims to say what they wanted to hear because they had already decided to ignore possible evidence that Sandusky was innocent.

Ghosts of Sandusky's dreams haunt home where charity was born

Full coverage of the Jerry Sandusky trial

Legal analysis by Wes Oliver

"The system decided Mr. Sandusky was guilty, and the system set out to convict him," he said, focusing on the testimony of two state investigators whose testimony appeared to be contradictory.

But McGettigan contended that the holes the defense poked in the case were, in fact, proof that there was no collusion.

"Everybody would have had to have been on the same page. Not so," he said.

McGettigan said it was easy for the defense to claim a conspiracy when "you don't name them. You just say 'the system.'"

But he said "the system" is made up of real people, in this case dozens of them who all wopuld have had to be in collusion for the last 15 years: the 10 alleged victims, the 24 grand jurors, the investigators, the arresting officers, corroborating witnesses like Sandusky's former colleague Michael McQueary, social services professionals, and McGettigan and his co-prosecutors themselves.

"If you conclude there's a conspiracy, someone bring handcuffs in for me and ... anyone else involved," McGettigan said, before concluding:

"What you should do is come out and say to the defendant that he molested, abused and assaulted (the alleged victims). He knows he did it, and you know he did it.

"Give him the justice he really deserves. Find him guilty of everything.

Three more charges dismissed
Sandusky originally was charged with 52 counts, but Cleland, who had previously dismissed one of them, threw out three more Thursday morning.

Two were charges alleging involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with one of the 10 alleged victims, which Cleland said the evidence didn't support. Had the jury convicted Sandusky on those two counts, Cleland said, he would have been required to set the convictions aside.

The third count was a duplicate of another count, he ruled.

Sandusky made no comment as he arrived at court Thursday morning with his wife, Dottie, who testified Tuesday that she never heard or saw her husband engage in any inappropriate behavior with children during their 45 years of marriage.

Sandusky had been widely expected to testify Wednesday before his lawyers abruptly rested their case after a lengthy conference in the judge's chambers.

A source close to Sandusky said "there was no one factor that led to the decision," but NBC News reported Thursday that Sandusky decided not to testify after his lawyers were warned that prosecutors would call his adopted son, Matt, as a rebuttal witness if he did so. The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told NBC News that Matt Sandusky was prepared to deliver damaging testimony about his father.

NBC's Savannah Guthrie discusses why the prosecution didn't call Jerry Sandusky's adopted son as a witness if he was able to provide damaging evidence.

In his final instructions, Cleland told jurors that they had great leeway in determining whether Sandusky's alleged behavior, while possibly troubling, may not have been criminal.

For example, he said, "it's not necessarily a crime for a man to take a shower with a boy. It's not necessarily a crime for a man to wash a boy's hair or lather his back or shoulders or to engage in back rubbing."

The bottom line was Sandusky's intent, "not the child's reaction," he told the jurors, who heard eight of the 10 alleged victims testify that they were traumatized by Sandusky's alleged advances.

In other words, "you must distinguish a display of innocent affection from lust," Cleland instructed.

?The Ultimate Fighter? makes changes, but will it be enough?

Usually, in the months before the UFC starts taping a season of "The Ultimate Fighter," the show holds open tryouts. Fighters from all over the country flock to hotel ballrooms to try to win the favor of the UFC execs watching their every move.

As the show heads into its 16th season, there were no tryouts. Instead, the UFC asked managers to bring welterweights to Las Vegas for auditions and personal interviews.

"I've never seen them skip the tryout process and fly guys straight in," one manager told MMAjunkie.com.

This isn't the only change coming to the UFC's long-running reality show. As Kevin Iole reported, the UFC is going back to a taped format after the 15th season aired fights live. FX has also decided to keep the show on Friday nights.

Though ratings are up for FX on Friday nights, the ratings for the show are down compared to previous seasons. Attendance and gate from the show's finale were also down.

TUF is first a television show, and two rules have always remained true about the modern television landscape. First, it's hard to keep any show fresh for 16 seasons. Secondly, Friday nights are where ratings go to die. There is not much the UFC can do to get around those truisms.

What other changes should "The Ultimate Fighter" make to get you to tune in? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Before they took the witness stand against Jerry Sandusky, the young men who say they were molested as boys by the former Penn State assistant football coach were nameless and faceless, identified in court papers only by number.

Their testimony, at times graphic and emotional, gave the public a glimpse of who they are now and how their lives have turned out in the years since Sandusky allegedly groped them, fondled them, and in some cases forced them into oral and anal sex.

One man, the jury learned, lives in Colorado and just graduated from Bible college. Another is an infantry sergeant in the Army National Guard and served in Iraq. A third spent time in state prison for robbery.

All met Sandusky, 68, through The Second Mile, the charity that he started to help troubled youths but that prosecutors say he used to find his victims.

A jury began deliberating the 48 charges against Sandusky on Thursday, weighing the accounts of the alleged victims against the claim by his attorney that Sandusky has been wrongfully accused by overzealous police and prosecutors and by young men with a financial motive to lie. The deliberations resume Friday morning.

Matt Casey, a lawyer representing the accusers known as Victims 3 and 7, said his clients are "understandably upset and nervous about this trial. Suffice it to say that they are struggling, as they have every day, with what happened."

Eight men in all took the stand, some of them reluctant witnesses confronting long-buried memories, others displaying raw emotion as they told jurors how Sandusky groomed them and then betrayed their trust.

Like many, the 25-year-old accuser known as Victim 10 testified he kept quiet about his molestation out of shame, fear and embarrassment. He descended into drug and alcohol abuse and was jailed for theft in 2004. Later, he robbed an elderly man and spent 23 months in state prison.

But he said he's doing "a lot better" now. "I'm married. I'm expecting." He said he didn't want to testify but decided "it's the right thing to do."

The two youngest victims earned their high school diplomas a few days before the trial started.

Eighteen-year-old Victim 1 sobbed violently as he testified about the first time Sandusky forced him to perform oral sex. The other 18-year-old ? who said he was raped in the basement of the Sandusky home and screamed in vain for someone to help ? could barely look at his alleged tormentor, demurring when asked to identify Sandusky for the record.

Told he must, the teenager, known as Victim 9, shot the briefest of glances at the retired coach and motioned disdainfully toward him.

Victim 3, now 25, testified that his behavior worsened the longer he endured Sandusky's abuse. The troubled teenager was sent to a pair of group homes, then placed into foster care. From there, he went into the Army and served in Iraq in 2008 and 2009.

He said Sandusky never contacted him or his mother to find out where he was or how he was doing ? and expressed pain over the snub.

"I'm mad, I'm outraged, I'm hurt," he said, "because he could just forget about me like I was nothing after I got sent away. I got sent away and that was it." He said that when he lived in a group home, he prayed that Sandusky would call and "maybe find a way to get me out of there. ... But it never happened."

Casey, his lawyer, said that even though Victim 3 is a "strong person," it's not correct to assume that because he turned his life around and entered the military, he's put the abuse behind him.

"He has to live with it every day, and that's not going to change," Casey said. "He's doing his best to make tomorrow better than today."

Victim 4 was the prosecution's first witness, a 28-year-old man who says he endured years of sexual abuse in the Sandusky home, hotels and university facilities. Jurors learned he became a father in 2007, doesn't own a credit card and has gotten behind on his rent.

Even now, years after the alleged abuse, the man said he'd rather forget.

"I don't even really want to admit this happened," he testified. "I've spent, you know, so many years burying this in the back of my head forever."

That may not be a good idea, according to experts in trauma.

"The idea of trying not to think about it or repressing the memories or pretending those things didn't happen is a Band-Aid coping approach," said clinical psychologist Matthew Goldfine, of the Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders. Far better, he said, is to work with a trained counselor to get it out in the open and learn how to come to grips. In fact, several of the victims said they have received therapy.

Victim 6, who alleged that Sandusky grabbed him in the shower in May 1998, told jurors he'd put what happened out of his mind until January 2011, when state police approached him about Sandusky.

Now 25, the alleged victim said his perception changed once he began thinking about the incident.

"I feel violated," said Victim 6, who just graduated from Bible college. "I've gone through a lot of emotional roller coasters since then."

Defense attorney Joseph Amendola questioned the accusers' credibility, alleging in his closing statement Thursday that the young men concocted stories in anticipation of a windfall from anticipated lawsuits. Six of the eight who testified against the famed coach have retained private attorneys.

Amendola also accused police of coaching the witnesses.

"The police kept going back, kept questioning them, saying, 'There's more to this. We don't think you're telling us the truth,'" Amendola said.

Prosecutor Joe McGettigan urged the jury to disregard the "conspiracy theory" offered by Amendola. Remember the victims, he urged ? and "give them back their souls."

Sandusky's arrest in November led the Penn State trustees to fire beloved coach Joe Paterno, saying he exhibited a lack of leadership after fielding a report from a graduate assistant about a 2001 assault in the football shower. The scandal also led to the ouster of university president Graham Spanier, and criminal charges against two university administrators for failing to properly report suspected child abuse and perjury. They await trial.
