Hitachi CP-A221N

Hitachi's ultra-short throw projectors have always been impressive, so it's no surprise that the CP-A221N ($1,300 street) carries on in that tradition. It can throw a big, bright image onto a screen only a few inches away; it delivers high quality data images and better than par video for an XGA data projector; and it goes beyond the basics, including features like the ability to mount it facing straight down to give you a tabletop display. Add it all up, and it's a runaway pick for Editors' Choice.

The CP-A221 is unusually small for an ultra-short throw projector. Most models from other companies, including the Dell S500wi ($1,599 direct, 4 stars), the NEC NP-U310W ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), and the Editors' Choice Optoma TW675UTi-3D ($1,800 street, 4 stars), are best reserved for either permanent installation or room to room portability on a cart. The CP-A221N is also suitable for both of those roles, but at 8.6 pounds and just 4.0 by 13.6 by 11.9 inches (HWD), it's light enough to carry by hand easily, and even use as a portable projector.

One other key difference between the Hitachi projector and the other three models is that the CP-A221N isn't interactive. That means you can't replace an interactive whiteboard with it. However, interactivity adds to the price, so if you don't need the feature, there's no reason to pay for it. Hitachi also offers a wireless tablet option ($399 list), that can serve much the same purpose by letting you draw and add annotations using the tablet.

Basics and Setup
Other than the ultra-short throw, the CP-A221N offers a typical set of features for an LCD-based XGA projector. To begin with, it doesn't show the rainbow artifacts common in DLP-based projectors. This isn't usually worth mention when talking about an LCD projector, because it's a given that there won't be any. In this case, however, most of the competition is DLP-based. So if you worry about the artifacts being an issue for someone in your audience, the guaranteed rainbow-free nature of an LCD-based projector can be an important advantage.

Setting up the projector is absolutely standard. Connection choices for data and video include an HDMI port for a computer or video source, two VGA ports for either computers or component video, a VGA pass-through port, and both S-video and composite video ports. In addition, there's a USB A port so you can plug in a USB memory key and read JPG, PNG, BMP, and GIF files directly.

Throw Distance, Brightness, and Image Quality
Hitachi says the suitable range for image sizes at the A221N's native 4:3 aspect ratio is 60 to 100 inches diagonally, with the front of the projector 3.8 to 13.9 inches from the screen. (Add 12.1 inches more to the mirror in the back of the projector, which is where the lens points, so the image can bounce off the mirror and towards the screen.) For my tests, I measured the image at 98 inches diagonally (78 inches wide) at not quite 14 inches from the screen, which is consistent with Hitachi's numbers.

Hitachi rates the projector at 2,200 lumens. That's lower than the 3,100 and 3,200 lumen ratings for the S500wi , NP-U310W , and TW675UTi-3D , but bright enough in my tests for the 98-inch image to stand up to moderate ambient light without a problem.

The projector scored well for data image quality. It did a good job of maintaining even brightness across the entire screen, which can be a problem for short throw and ultra-short throw projectors, and it sailed through our standard suite of DisplayMate tests without any serious problems. Colors were vibrant and fully saturated, both black on white and white on black text was crisp and easily readable down to the smallest size we test with, and images designed to show pixel jitter were rock solid even with an analog connection.

The projector's native resolution limits video to standard definition, so a 16:9 image falls far short of the level of crispness you'd expect at 720p, much less 1080p. However, the projector will accept signals all the way up to 1080p before scaling them down. More important, aside from the lack of fine detail. it handles video unusually well for a data projector.

I saw a slight hint of posterization (shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually), and problems with shadow detail (losing details based on shading in dark areas), but only in scenes that tend to cause those problems. I didn't see either issue in the vast majority of our test clips, and I didn't see any other important issues. The quality isn't a match for a typical home theater projector, but it's good enough to let you watch a full-length movie without being distracted by obvious flaws in the image.

Other Issues

The A221N's 10-watt mono speaker is another plus. The audio systems in most projectors in this weight class are hardly worth having. The A221N, however offers reasonably good sound quality, and enough volume to fill a large conference room or mid-size classroom.

One other feature, which I've already mentioned, is that you can mount the projector facing down to turn a tabletop into a display. Not all ultra-short throw projectors can manage this trick. Facing down changes airflow, which can lead to overheating and shorter lamp life. However, the A221N is designed for facing either down or forward, and Hitachi even sells an optional tabletop mount for it ($200 street).

Also worth mention is that although the projector's fan is loud enough in Normal mode (with a 34 dB rating) to be a little distracting if you're sitting right next to it around a table, switching to Eco mode drops it to whisper quiet (rated at 28 dB). It doesn't hurt either that Eco mode increases lamp life from a claimed 3,000 hours to 5,000. At $329 (list) per lamp, that can lower the total cost of ownership significantly.

As should be obvious, the Hitachi A221N does what it promises, and does it well. Small enough to be portable and bright enough for permanent installation in a conference room, it can give you a big image in tight quarters, so you don't have to worry about shadows from anything near the screen. It offers high-quality data images and useable video?which is more than you can say for a lot of data projectors. And its long lamp life in Eco mode can save money over the projector lifetime. If you need an ultra-short throw projector with a native XGA resolution, put the Hitachi A221N high on your short list.

There's no shortage of iPad newsreading apps, software that's designed to give you a clean reading experience on Apple's slate. While apps such as such as Google Currents (Free, 3.5 stars), Flipboard (Free, 4.5 stars), and Zite (Free, 4. Stars) focus on replicating a print experience, Readability specializes in bookmarking?both on the iPad and on the desktop. The free app not only lets you read Web pages in a clutter-free environment, but you can save an archive stories for offline reading. It's one of our favorite new iPad reading app, and more than worthy of an Editors' Choice award.

Getting Started With Readability
When you launch Readability, you encounter a signup screen that prompts you to create a username and password. You also have the option of taking a swipe-able virtual tour that serves as a guide to using the app. Once you're logged into Readability, the app presents an extremely clean, near-blank reading area that has a simple menu bar on top and a lone "Getting started with Readability for iPad" blur that serves as a sample of the reading experience. Tapping the blurb opens a link to an introductory post on the Readability blog that gives you a rundown of how to use the service?another instructional piece just in case you skipped the tour. I decided to leave that there as reference and move on to adding links.

The Readability Experience
Adding links is as simple as tapping the "+" icon, and keying in a URL or site name into the search area. When you open a page that you'd like to read, Readability serves up two options: Read Now and Read Later. Tapping Read Now strips a webpage down to the basics by removing ads, headers, and other potentially distracting elements. What's left behind is a webpage that resembles other iPad newsreading apps in that it features black text on a spacious white background, which makes it simple to focus on content?the stripped down look is pleasing to the eye. Readability, however, differs from them in that each URL is given its own separate page; it doesn't attempt a magazine or newspaper column-based format. You can, naturally, view the Web page in its natural state by tapping the "Web View" link in the upper-right corner.

Bringing a finger to the bottom of the page makes a menu bar appear that lets you choose one of five font styles, text sizes, and column widths?there's a nice amount of customization. You can also invert the page from dark text on a light background to light text on a dark background. Tapping Read Later bookmarks your page (more on that later). Tapping the options icon lets you share articles via email, Facebook, or Twitter. There are also options to open the full page in Safari, and to copy the URL to the iPad's clipboard for pasting elsewhere.

Reading Stories Later
When you return to the home screen you'll see all the stories that you've saved when you tapped "Read Later." Tapping "Edit" lets you archive or delete stories (archived stories disappear from the reading list, but are searchable if you enable that feature in Options). Double-tapping one of the save stories opens a small column left of the article that lets you favorite, delete, or archive. Stories that you've saved are synced to Readability.com where you can also view stories. The Web page houses the Readability browser extension, which lets you Read Now, Read Later, and Send To Kindle. The one drawback is that Readability does a poor job in bookmarking top-level URLs such as PCMag.com. While you can certainly save those links, they are rendered quite poorly in the stripped down view; you have to open "Web View" to properly read them.

NJ teachers union tops lobbyist spending list

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? For the second straight year, New Jersey's powerful teachers union has topped the list of lobbyist spending by special interest groups.

The New Jersey Education Association spent $11.3 million in 2011 ? more than any other single group ever, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the state Election Law Enforcement Commission. Verizon, which came in second to the NJEA, spent $1.2 million and the AFL-CIO spent $794,000.

State election records show that $10.8 million of the NJEA total went toward advertisements in 2011, shattering the NJEA's record of $6.6 million in communication spending in 2010. Much of the advertising was anti-Gov. Chris Christie and his education proposals.

Christie said Wednesday he's not surprised by the spending, which he called a "political slush fund."

"I feel badly for teachers who pay their dues every year in order to have that kind of garbage put on the air," Christie said. "Teachers pay nearly $800 a year in union dues annually and have to pay 85 percent of that even if they opt out.

"There's a desperate need for change in leadership over there," Christie added. "They should be replaced, but apparently only a palace coup will do that."

The governor suggested the money would be better spent by using it to off-set some of his cuts to public worker health and pension benefits. The union represents about 195,000 working and retired school employees in New Jersey.

NJEA spokesman Steve Wollmer said the advertising was needed for the union to defend itself against the governor's attacks.

"We took that money and used it to educate the public about the governor's priorities, about his obvious preference for millionaires over public schools," Wollmer said. "We thought that was an import narrative to get out there."

The majority of the money was spent between March and June of last year leading up to the passage of the state budget, Wollmer said. The group used the money for billboards, television, radio and Internet ads, and even to hire a banner plane. The plane flew along the Jersey shore on Memorial Day weekend with a sign that read: "Millionaires for Christie," a reference to the governor's vetoes of attempts to raise income taxes on millionaires.

Wollmer said the money the group used for the advertising wasn't originally budgeted for, but was approved as an extraordinary expense by the union as the governor's public tongue-lashings intensified.

"Our members were outraged by the attacks and they insisted we do something," he said.

Spending by the union lobby eclipsed other special interest groups. Verizon, which came in second to the NJEA, spent $1.2 million and the AFL-CIO spent $794,000.

?Russia?s embattled ruling party is desperately searching for ways to regain the public trust it lost amid the recent street protests, the largest since the early 1990s.

The latest plan? Twitter.

As United Russia scrambles to modernize and reform in the face of an increasingly disenchanted public, one party official has called for members to become more connected with those they govern. Andrei Ilnitsky, deputy head of United Russia?s central executive committee, even proposed an evaluation system to track members? progress.

?You have a Twitter [account]? You get a plus,? he recently told the RBK business daily. ?If not? Sorry, nothing personal ? zero.?

As Russia lurches toward the March 4 presidential elections, which Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is widely expected to win, Russia?s opposition forces continue to rally against Mr. Putin and United Russia itself. Much of the opposition?s communication takes place on social networks such as Live Journal and Twitter, which are now the virtual crossroads for everything from anti-establish?ment jokes to serious political discussion.

And although a number of Russian politicians ? including President Dmitry Medvedev ? are now active on Twitter, those looking to Putin as an example may be disappointed: His disdain for the Internet is widely recognized, and the ex-KGB spy even once famously stated that it is ?50 percent pornography.?

India's Supreme Court to Hear Dispute on Drug Patents | indian ...

But most of that medicine has been generic copies of brand-name drugs protected by patents in Europe and the United States. Now a big Swiss drug company, Novartis, may be one legal step away from upending the Indian supply chain by forcing the Indian government to recognize a patent for a cancer treatment heralded as a breakthrough for people with a deadly form of leukemia.

The case, involving the drug Gleevec, is before the Indian Supreme Court, which is preparing to hear final arguments this month. It represents a high-stakes showdown between defenders of intellectual property rights, who say the generic knockoffs stifle innovation by drug makers, and Indian drug companies and international aid groups, who warn that a ruling in favor of Novartis could dry up the global supply of inexpensive medicines to treat AIDS, cancer and other diseases.

The case has attracted international attention. AIDS activists and others protested recently outside Novartis?s annual shareholders meeting in Basel, Switzerland, and also at Novartis offices in New York, Washington and Cambridge, Mass., demanding that the company drop the case.

?There will be nothing left to defend if we lose,? said Leena Menghaney, a manager based in New Delhi for Doctors Without Borders, which advocates for generic drugs. ?People are definitely on edge about this case.?

The Indian government denied the patent for Gleevec, as it has for many other drugs made by many Western drug makers. Novartis sued, and the case has been winding through the Indian legal system for six years. The government is under some pressure from its trading partners, including the United States, to relent in the dispute.

The Obama administration and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the drug industry?s main lobbying group, object to the section in the Indian patent law at issue in the case. And perhaps fearful that the section might be adopted elsewhere, Washington wants the nations negotiating a new Pacific Rim trade agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, to agree to grant patents in situations similar to that involving Gleevec, according to a leaked text of the government?s position.

The decision could also help determine how much Western drug companies invest in India at a time when they want to increase sales in emerging markets to compensate for slowing business in the United States and Western Europe.

Approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2001 after a rapid review, Gleevec can cost $70,000 a year in the United States, though the company says it has programs through which patients in poor countries can get it at a hefty discount or, in some cases, free. Indian generic versions cost about $2,500 a year.

The drug, which is sold outside the United States by Novartis as Glivec and known generically as imatinib mesylate, has turned deadly chronic myelogenous leukemia into a manageable chronic disease for many patients. It is also used to treat a form of gastrointestinal cancer.

India is the world?s third-largest drug producer by volume and exports about $10 billion worth of generic medicines every year, more than any other country, primarily selling to other fast-growing developing countries that are expected to become significant new markets for big drug companies. Doctors Without Borders says that 80 percent of the generic AIDS drugs it supplies to an estimated 170,000 people in Africa and elsewhere are made in India.

India?s conflict with Western drug companies over patents dates to 1970, when the country stopped granting drug patents. India resumed granting drug patents in 2005 as part of a World Trade Organization agreement on patents, but medicines created before 1995 did not qualify. And that?s where the disagreement arises over Gleevec.

The case before the Supreme Court involves a section in India?s patent law that prohibits a newer form of a known substance from receiving a patent unless it significantly improves the medicine?s ?efficacy,? or effectiveness. The standard was aimed at preventing a practice known as evergreening, in which a pharmaceutical company makes minor changes to existing drugs and earns new patents, thereby providing many more years of protection from generic competition.

?The implications of the case go to all medicines,? said Brook K. Baker, a professor of law at Northeastern University in Boston and a policy analyst for the Health Global Access Project, which works to improve access to H.I.V. drugs. ?The question is, Do you get one patent monopoly for the basic ingredient or do you keep tweaking it to get more patents??

Tahir Amin, a director of the Initiative for Medicines, Access and Knowledge, a group based in New York that works on patent cases to foster access to drugs, said many drugs for AIDS and other diseases have been denied patents in India because of the clause and manufacturers might benefit from a victory for Novartis.

Gilead Sciences, for instance, is appealing India?s rejection of a patent application for its drug Viread, or tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, which is used to treat H.I.V. infection. And Roche is fighting several court cases to uphold its patent on the anticancer drug Tarceva, or erlotinib, that Indian drug makers argue does not meet the effectiveness standard. Courts have allowed generic versions of that drug to be sold in India while the case is being litigated.

India?s patent law does not define ?efficacy? or say how it should be measured. Novartis is arguing that the term should encompass modifications that might make a drug safer or easier to use, not just more effective in treating a disease. It says more than 40 other countries have granted a patent on Gleevec.
